I got to know Kitty in the early 1990’s and looked to her as a friend and teacher over many years.  This photograph was taken during one of the first projects I helped her with.  She and Pinky Bass were building a large walk-in camera obscura (pinhole camera) at Penland School of Crafts; it was in the shape of a pregnant belly, with the bellybutton as the pinhole, and they called it “The Mother.”  This image was taken inside the belly, with her and Pinky looking out.

My work with Kitty on the documentary film Enough – which followed her as she developed a set of sculptures on death and dying – continues to be a touchstone in my life.  Her inquisitive mind, irreverent sense of humor, compassion for others, and passion for the natural world are carried on in our hearts and voices.  As we think and laugh and care and work, she lives through us.  Her hand touches this project as surely as it touched the clay.
