In 1986 I met Kitty as we were on our way to Cortona, Italy for the Studies Abroad Program, she as an Artist in Residence and I as a graduate student in photography. And that was the beginning of our annual trips -- to places like Oaxaca, Mexico and Ghost Ranch; to Artist Residencies (including Macedonia and the Headlands Center for the Arts); and to speak and teach; and to install our work for various collaborative exhibitions.
Although ceramics and photography are not particularly "media friendly"
we managed to combine the materials as well as the concepts. We were both interested in the figure and its place in the natural world. Our two-person exhibition /Erda: Birth of New Forms /was presented at The Light Factory in Charlotte, NC and this image comes from that body of work, taken shortly after the hurricane Hugo. That year we had traveled to McClellanville, SC and to this day some of my favorite photographs come from an intermingling of her figure with elements of nature. These images will always represent for me her physical and spiritual connection with the earth.
